In an era when information is everywhere, Paul Keery (MLIS’84) emphasizes the need for individuals to understand how information is collected and disseminated in order to know how it’s to be used.
Paul acts on this conviction each day. As the head of social sciences at a private school in Oakville, ON, he has created a course called Foresight Studies that teaches students to examine major change. Paul has also created a legacy gift to Western which, once realized, will be endowed at Foundation Western to create an annual student award in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies.
The Paul Keery Memorial Award in Media will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student who:
*is studying the evolution and future of media,
*exhibits academic achievement, and
*demonstrates financial need.
Paul created his legacy through a life insurance policy on the advice of his financial advisor. It is an effective way for him to save money for retirement and shelter it from tax.
“I’m happy to be able to help students at Western,” says Paul. “While I only attended the University for one year, I really enjoyed it. This legacy gift is my way of ‘paying it forward’ so others can enjoy a positive educational experience with a respected institution that will always be here.”
